About

Britt Marie Trensmar's roots are to be found in the archipelago between Sweden and Finland. For hundreds of years her ancestors were farmers and fisherman in this harsh Nordic island environment where art had little place.

Men are a central theme in Trensmar’s work. Using art as her vehicle, she looks for answers to the riddle that is Man. At the core of this quest lies a secret, off-limits father, a stepfather who remained a stranger to his grave, a grandfather who disappeared during the war and other mythic islanders who were never recovered after the battles of the Russo-Finnish War.

The different expectations facing men and women caught Britt Marie’s attention as a child, and are a recurring theme. She has mined this emotional landscape since the early 1990’s, probing issues such as gender, identity, sexuality, right of perspective, and voyeurism. Britt Marie Trensmar’s exploration of the male of the species, and her mode of expression, have generated a great deal of attention. Her images invite discussion and provoke scores of different reactions – from shock to delight.
